all great reads-thx, however........ I was thinking more about the blues - pain while living, not words about (Black Peter) death. I would have listed the Stella line if it was what I thought it was for my first decade or so on the bus, that is, "there's nothing you can hope for very long" - and being the hypocrite that I am I'll add that our Pres elect should think about that.

As always the poet comes to mind, but I think Jer may have added the nec soul to make the words ring true;

"Aint it just like the night to play tricks on you when your trying to be so quiet" Jer sings it from his soul on that next to last night in Chicago.

There has to be a few Jer/Hunter ones we're missing, or I was on the wrong bus!!

dakest lines ever (not garcia/hunter)

The warden led the prisoner
Down the hallway to his doom
I stood up to say goodbye like all the rest

And I heard him tell the warden
Just before they reached my cell
Let my guitar-playin' friend sing my request

Chorus Sing me back home
A song I used to hear
Make my old memories
Come alive

Sing me away
Turn back the years
Sing me back home
Before I die

I recall last Sunday morning
When a choir from off the street
Came in to sing a few old gospel songs

And I heard him tell the singers
There's a song my mama sang
Could I hear it once before you travel on

The warden led the prisoner
Down the hallway to his doom
I stood up to say goodbye like all the rest

And I heard him tell the warden
Just before they reached my cell
Let my guitar playin' friend sing my request

Let him
Chorus
Sing me back home
Before I die

(merle haggard)

This song Might fit the bill
Beilive it Or Not
One or two moments
a piece of your time
is all I am asking
and I'll give you mine
One or two moments
out of all you have got
to show how I love you
believe it or not

Remember the day
I rolled into town
with my heart in my shoes,
my head hanging down?
Now my only trouble
the rest I forgot
is to show how I love you
believe it or not

Done time in the lockup
Done time in the street
Done time on the upswing
and time in defeat
I know what I'm asking
and I know it's a lot
when I say that I love you
believe it or not

I know I'm no angel
my prospects are high
as the floodline in summer
when the river's gone dry
but I'll roll up my shirtsleeves
and make my best shot
to show how I love you
believe it or not

Right now while the sun shines
on the crest of the hill
with a breeze in the pines
and a grey whipoorwill
making music together
that guitars never caught
[in a world time forgot]--alternate line
let me show how I love you
believe it or not

is heartbreak dark?

Here beside him stands a man
a soldier by the looks of him
who came through many fights
but lost at love.....

...Since the end is never told
we pay the teller off in gold
in hopes he will come back
but he cannot be bought or sold

I just listened to 9/9/88 - pretty good, except for Jer skipping the 2nd verse and singing the last one twice as only he can

I wonder why it was dropped so quick?

I read somewhere and I think it was Hunter who might have said that it was emotionally to hard for Jerry to sing or something to that effect. I'll have to find that interview again.

if that's what you're looking for, these have always hit me in the category of a life "unfulfilled":

All the things I planned to do
I only did half way

Can't win for trying

Half of my life
I spent doin' time for
some other fucker's crime

and Jer should have covered this:
